The Plateau State Judiciary has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of children, following a courtesy visit by the Child Protection Network (CPN) to the High Court of Justice on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
The delegation, led by the Secretary CPN, Mrs. Grace Adam Solomon, engaged the Judiciary’s leadership on critical issues affecting children within the justice system. Key matters discussed included:
The noticeable improvement in implementation of the Plateau State Child Rights Law 2005 within the last few years; The remand of underage children in line with the Child Rights Law (CRL) 2005 and ROLAC; The handling of cases by police prosecutors at Magistrate and Area Courts and Strengthening the relationship between the criminal justice system and the child justice system. In his response, the Honourable Chief Judge of Plateau State, Justice D.G. Mann, commended the initiative of the CPN, describing the visit as both timely and significant. He highlighted steps already taken by the Judiciary to strengthen child protection, including the designation of three High Court Judges and two Magistrate Courts within Jos to handle family-related matters, as well as the establishment of a Gender Court for Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) cases.
Hon. Justice D.G. Mann also noted that since 2023, the Family Court has been allocated space in the old Chief Registrar’s office in the old High Court Building in Jos, which is complete with a nursery to provide comfort for children involved in proceedings. While acknowledging progress made, he stressed that more needs to be done and pledged continuous partnership with the CPN to safeguard the rights of children through the creation of more Family Courts across the State.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, CPN’s Legal Adviser, Mrs. Agaba, assured that the Network will provide detailed reports on the conditions of children in juvenile homes, with a view to addressing the concerns raised.
The Courtesy Visit ended with a visit to the Family Court and the Nursery.
